Question: How can my child join Chorus?

Answer: The choral program at Aversboro is open to all fourth and fifth grade students who wish to participate. View the Overview of Choral Program handout. Students must write a paragraph entitled, "Why I Would Make a Good Chorus Student" and return a packet of forms to Mrs. Hopkins in order to join the choral program. Chorus forms are available on the Forms page. The forms are also available from Mrs. Hopkins. Parents will need to provide performance clothing for students. Boys will need dark dress pants, a white shirt, and dress shoes. Girls will need a dark-colored solid skirt, white blouse, and dress shoes. The school will provide royal blue sashes for the students to wear.

Question: How is the choral program structured?

Answer: Students wishing to join the choral program at Aversboro begin in the Performance Chorus. This group performs for the Fall and Winter Concerts. Members must have a grade of 3 or 2 in classroom work habits to maintain eligibility to participate in the choral program. Attendance at chorus rehearsals will be at the discretion of the classroom teacher. Singers must remain in good standing according to the Chorus Behavior Management Plan for participation in the choral program or lose the privilege of being a member.

The Aversboro Honors Chorus performs in the Spring Concert. Students wishing to join the Honors Chorus must be a member of the Performance Chorus, must be at a level 3 or 2 in the Chorus Behavior Management Plan, and must sing an audition for Mrs. Hopkins. The purpose of the audition is to provide students with the experience of auditioning for a performance group. Students singing with the Honors Chorus will be challenged with more advanced singing techniques and higher musical expectations.

Question: Will I need to provide an instrument for my child for music classes?

Answer: Aversboro Elementary will provide all the instruments your child will need for music classes. Parents of fifth grade students may wish to purchase a soprano recorder for your child to play at home for additional practice during our recorder unit. Recorders are woodwind instruments which can be purchased inexpensively at local music and toy stores.
