Getting to know Mrs. Hopkins...

 
Childhood: Mrs. Hopkins grew up in Oil City, a small town in northwestern Pennsylvania.  

 
Hobbies: Mrs. Hopkins is an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. She is also a sports mom who supports the baseball, football, basketball, and soccer activities of her two sons.  

 
International Studies: Mrs. Hopkins spent the summer before her senior year of high school living with a family in Recife, Brazil as an exchange student with the American Field Service. She spent her junior year of college in Vienna, Austria. She studied German at the University of Vienna and voice at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna. As part of her graduate studies, she spent a semester at Phillips University in Marburg, Germany.  

 
Awards and Recognition of Teaching:

Teacher of the Year nominee for Aversboro Elementary School in 1990-1991
and again in 2000-2001

Committee chair and project director for
an Arts Education Initiative Grant from the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County entitled "Discovering the Art of Communication Through Opera and Musical Theater"

Recognized by the Wake County Public School System as a teacher exemplifying self-discipline as part of the WCPSS's Character Education Program

Recognized by the Garner Education Foundation as an outstanding educator in Garner

Served as a grant committee member for a Wake Education Partnership grant entitled "From C to Shining C: Committed to Caring" honoring the 100th anniversary of the song "America the Beautiful"

 

 
Professional Organization: Mrs. Hopkins is a member of the National Association for Music Education and the North Carolina Association of Educators.  

 
Favorite Quote and Philosophy about Teaching: Mrs. Hopkins' favorite quotation that embodies her philosophy about music and teaching comes from John Ruskin, a 19th century British artist and scholar. He once wrote, "When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece." Her greatest reward from teaching comes from the knowledge that she has influenced young lives and has empowered her students to believe in themselves as "masterpieces".
